The Submission is an interdisciplinary journal whose sole purpose is to display the impressive array of work by students, alumni, faculty, and staff of SUNY Purchase every month. Created in 2004 by a circle of students passionate about the arts at SUNY Purchase, The Submission has grown above and beyond its original marble-notebook aesthetic to a clean and polished professional arts journal. When these wonderful students sat down and discussed the possibility of making an arts magazine prevalent on campus, it was clear that creating an arts magazine at an art school was a common desideratum amongst the board members and presumably, for the campus as a whole. There needed to be something to fill this gap and what started as a common idea slowly became a magazine budgeted by the Purchase Student Government Association. As the magazine progressed, there was talk amongst the board members of printing the magazine off campus, providing an artistic function unto itself. Within a year, the magazine was being printed on glossy paper and its old monochromatic pages transformed into a fantastic arrangement of colors.
The Submission has evolved dramatically from its inception. The mission of the magazine, however, has remained the same: to showcase the multi-facetted art forms that have made Purchase the campus it is today. From poetry to painting, fiction to photography, essay to mixed media, article to screenplay, The Submission has kept its promise with the community to push the creativity of the student body onto a printed pedestal, available for all the campus to see. In only its third year, The Submission has successfully become an integral service on campus, exemplifying the philosophy at SUNY Purchase of an endless range of talents and abilities. It is our hope that future years will bring more promise, more potential, and more passion for the arts at Purchase—we’ll still be here, waiting eagerly to publish artists of all kinds in our magazine. We wouldn’t be where we are now without all of your contributions. |
